The sun and your skin care

Since the sun is the primary cause of skin damage and premature wrinkling, it is essential to use a quality sunscreen product when outside during the day.

  • Choose a quality sunscreen product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 with a broad spectrum of protection. Even on cloudy days, the skin is exposed to UVA and UVB rays.
  • Avoid the midday sun, as this is when the sun is at its strongest. A good tip is if your shadow is much shorter than you are, then the sun is strong.
  • Repeat applications of sunscreen products if you are swimming, playing outdoor sports or plan to stay outside all day or near highly reflective surfaces such as the water/sea, beach or snow.
  • Choose sunscreen products that are non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic to help keep pores unclogged.
  • Some medication (such as acne medication, other antibiotics, heart medication, the contraceptive pill etc.) can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Increase sun protection and seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned.
  • Wear protective sunglasses as the sun’s UV rays can also damage the eyes.
